Secret Spot Wines “Lacrau” Reserva, Field Blend Tinto Douro Valley, Portugal 2015 (750mL)

“This Douro Tinto took us by surprise for its elegance, finesse, and silky tannins. Far from your overpowering red table wine from the region that Port hails from. We’re talking “Reserva” quality without the lofty “reserve” price tag.”

Rui Cunha, the winemaker and co-owner of “Secret Spot Wines” has worked up and down the Vinho Verde and the Douro consulting for a wide range of properties. He co-launched his own brand back in 2004 to showcase old-vines from under-the-radar sites from independent growers. There’s not just one spot, but an array, covering a multitude of native grape varietals. He’s a tailor who handcrafts each wine to speak of the place it comes from. Less is more during the winemaking and aging process for Rui. Every little detail is considered to ultimately illustrate the site’s unique characteristics with elegance, finesse, and coherence.

The black label “Lacrau”, the Portuguese name for scorpion, relies on the four main grape varietals that are the backbone for Port production. Sourced from different sites with deep brown schist soils. You can literally smell the mineral drive from the soil in this wine. While many Douro Tintos can be overblown and overripe upon release. With a few years in the bottle, the “Lacrau” is an eye-opener in how plush and silky a Douro blend can be. The wine still has an inky violet color. A fragrant nose of red berries, candied plums, dried white flowers, pipe tobacco, and bitter chocolate puts your olfactory receptors on high alert. Silky-smooth on the entry with midweight texture and expensive dark fruit flavors. Graceful and generous on the mid-palate with an extremely balanced, savory, and subtle finish. You will rethink the Douro after tasting this effort. Stock up and enjoy some for the very near future and keep some back for another three to five years.
