Francis Blanchet, Pouilly-Fumé “Kriotine”

Francis recognizes that his small-production Pouilly-Fumé bottlings are highly sought-after—his front door is imprinted by the knuckles of a thousand importers—so you’d expect one of two outcomes: an increase in production or ramped-up prices. Some producers get away with both, but Francis hasn’t done either. What’s more, the quality of each new release seems to reach unprecedented levels. It’s a traditionally crafted, extremely affordable, must-have ‘collectible’ for anyone who admires pure Loire Valley terroir and the value of a dollar.

In Francis Blanchet’s eyes, creating a lineup of high-quality, resolutely classic Sauvignon Blanc boils down to one, simple mantra: Different soil? Different wine! This 2020 “Kriotine,” unafraid of flaunting its wonderfully ripe and exotic layers, is sourced from a tiny 1.7-hectare vineyard on chalky-limestone soils. And these unique, ancient soils make all the difference.

The fruit is hand-harvested and fermented using only ambient yeasts in stainless steel. Afterward, the resulting wine ages in steel tanks for approximately six months where it initially undergoes a bâtonnage (lees-stirring) regimen. It is then quickly bottled to preserve the freshness and strong mineral imprint. Layers of green tropical fruit, citrus, and crushed stones blast out of the glass and race around your palate with luxuriously ripe textures and zippy energy. It’s one of the cool moments in wine where you can nail the grape and place before even tasting—that’s Francis Blanchet for you.

France

Bourgogne

Beaujolais

Enjoying the greatest wines of Beaujolais starts, as it usually does, with the lay of the land. In Beaujolais, 10 localities have been given their own AOC (Appellation of Controlled Origin) designation. They are: Saint Amour; Juliénas; Chénas; Moulin-à Vent; Fleurie; Chiroubles; Morgon; Régnié; Côte de Brouilly; and Brouilly.

Southwestern France

Bordeaux

Bordeaux surrounds two rivers, the Dordogne and Garonne, which intersect north of the city of Bordeaux to form the Gironde Estuary, which empties into the Atlantic Ocean. The region is at the 45th parallel (California’s Napa Valley is at the38th), with a mild, Atlantic-influenced climate enabling the maturation of late-ripening varieties.

Central France

Loire Valley

The Loire is France’s longest river (634 miles), originating in the southerly Cévennes Mountains, flowing north towards Paris, then curving westward and emptying into the Atlantic Ocean near Nantes. The Loire and its tributaries cover a huge swath of central France, with most of the wine appellations on an east-west stretch at47 degrees north (the same latitude as Burgundy).

Northeastern France

Alsace

Alsace, in Northeastern France, is one of the most geologically diverse wine regions in the world, with vineyards running from the foothills of theVosges Mountains down to the Rhine River Valley below.
