Domaine Duroché, Gevrey-Chambertin

The Duroché family has been producing wine under their own label since 1933, and they’ve been farmers and grape growers for much longer, but it wasn’t until fifth generation winemaker Pierre Duroché took the helm in 2005 that the slightly rustic, old school charm of this estate begin to transform into something truly exceptional. Fast forward 15 years and Pierre is considered one of the preeminent rising stars in Gevrey-Chambertin, and Burgundy writ large. But he didn’t make his mark by boosting his wines with richness and oak, instead he took the family's understated style to new levels of elegance, complexity, and terroir transparency. The 2021 vintage plays perfectly into Pierre’s style, and these are some of the most graceful and pure Gevrey wines out there, and given the attention and rave reviews he receives from the press, they still offer excellent value. This is the perfect opportunity to get in before Duroché becomes another impossible to find Red Burgundy.

The Duroché Villages Gevrey is made from a collection of parcels scattered throughout the village, but all the vines were planted between 1950 and 1980, so are at least 40 years old and over 70 in some parcels. True to Pierre’s style, this is a supremely elegant Gevrey, with more red than black fruit, and a silky, soft texture that hides a sneaky complexity of flavors, aromatics, and structure. It should be enjoyable on the younger side, but will also be a perfect short to medium term cellar candidate, and will offer loads of enjoyment over the next few years while you wait for the more “serious” wines to mature.
